The Editor says...   First of all, I’d like to thank my good buddy Kel for taking over the helm of the trusty T4 while I snoozed my way back from le Bug Show! Wow, what a weekend, and of course, you can read all about it this month, and also next month! Star of the show for many was Gianni Sanchez’s awesome air-cooled K70. The exclusive feature starts on page 52, and we’re sure this one will cause quite a stir! In fact, we’ve put together a crazy collection of either alternative-engined VWs such as Dave Harries’s mid-mounted V8 Bus and our ongoing, Subaru-powered Manxter Buggy project. Add to that the VW-powered (or alternate-bodied VWs!) such as the funky little Fiat 500 and some of the crazy kit cars at the NHRA museum meet, and you really do have one eclectic mix of VW oddities! And that’s what this is all about - anything goes! It’s easy to get tangled up in building a traditional Cal-Looker, or perhaps a 100-point perfect Bus resto, and I have the utmost respect for those people dedicated to such causes, but I can’t help but feel it’s the truly crazy stuff (like Gianni’s K70) that really makes the VW scene stand head and shoulders above niche hobbies. And it’s not just the older stuff that’s ‘out there’, either. Did you happen to catch the recent BBC news report on the poop-powered New Beetle? The full story is on the website, but my point is that there’s probably a good reason why those chose a VW to become the poop-ride of tomorrow – possibly the ‘anything goes’ association?
