Name: Paul Knight
Vehicle: T4 Westfalia California
Engine Size: 2500cc
Purchase date: April 2007
Modifications:Since importing this Camper from Germany (Westfalia never offered a full Camper on the UK market, hence the importation!) back in April, my modifications have been largely cosmetic. On went a set of 18" Audi RS8 replica wheels with extra-load low-profile tyres, followed by a good slap with the lowering stick. Actually, the drop isn't huge as I'm used to (!) being just -45mm at the rear and approx 50-55mm up front (dropped via the factory adjusters). I fitted a KW suspension kit (from www.bluebird-type2.co.uk), which is specifically designed for heavy-weight vans. The kit consisted of a pair of heavy-duty rear springs and four uprated dampers, and I have to say the ride quality and handling are second to none. Also, having transported four staffers, all their equipment and also the Ultra VW trade equipment on a 2000-mile trip around Europe, the load-carrying capabilities are obviously impressive!
As far as the bodywork is concerned, the ugly 'California' decals were painstakingly removed and the factory paint was polished (for the first time in years!). On went a de-badged front grille, clear front indicator lenses and a set of smoked rear lamps followed by a set of German-style license plates, and that's about all.
Inside little has changed, and nor will it as the Westy set-up is superb and in great condition.

Future plans:
As a workhorse and family Camper, there's not much more to do. I'd like to go a little lower, but the need to be able to carry the weight of the trade equipment means I probably wont. Tinted windows are a 'quite probable' mod, and I may look into the viability of an LPG conversion at some point. Then there's the idea of a sportier exhaust system to unleash the burble of the silky smooth Audi 5-cylinder motor, perhaps along with an induction kit of some kind. Nothing too crazy, just a few tweaks...
